2024 Spring Season
Pirate tennis opens belated season with inaugural wins
by John Heglie
At Polson, Pirate tennis teams were finally able to inaugurate their season against the visiting Yellowjackets of Stevensville as the hypothermic collusion between figurative Jack Frost with the late March roaring of the winter lion dissipated long enough to actually play some matches. The Lady Pirates swept the singles matches, while the Lady Yellowjackets countered with their own sweep of doubles duels as Polson had a player play twice in the #1 doubles match.
In #1 singles, Julia Barnard elevated her game after getting stung by her Yellowjacket opponent in the opening set to close out the match with back-to-back 6-4s.
The Pirate boys inaugurated their state title defense as they sailed through their opposition, but not without encountering some choppy seas along the way. Taegan Gage applied a bookend sandwich to win his match when his Jacket opponent captured the middle set at #2 singles. Brother Strider Gage won in two sets, but the opener extended into extras before the set could be secured.
The girls backhand bonanza carried a hint of international intrigue served with dash of European flavor. Polson #2 singles Summer Newman competed against CeCe Franchi, an Italian foreign exchange student, while the Polson #3 doubles duo of Adamary Guerrero/Ziya Walker competed against a double dose of Deutche in German foreign exchange students Maja Masinic/Jana Puell.

Pirate netters a cut above at Cut Bank
by John Heglie
At Cutbank the second weekend of April, Polson tennis teams got a chance to face some tough eastern competition with both teams posting 3-1 records by the conclusion of the invitational with wins over Hardin, Havre and East Helena.
Pirate netters faced their stiffest competition of the season thus far from Billings Central. Pirate twice state placer (2023:S 2nd, 2022:S 5th) #1 singles Torrin Ellis was barely edged by the Rams Justus Hendrickson 8-7(8). The only boys match winners would be #2 doubles tandem Brock Henriksen/Ruger Ellis, who held off their opponents 8-7(2). Lady Pirate #4 singles Greta Lund would score the only points of the competition against the Billings Central girls with an 8-4 win over her opponent.

Polson teams continue impressive season
The Polson boys and girls’ tennis teams went undefeated during a week with four tennis matches in 6 days. The boys raised their record to 16-0 on the season and the girls are now 15-1.
Clara Todd completed another undefeated week and still has not lost a set this season. Clara defeated her toughest conference competition, Cloey Ramage of Columbia Falls for the third time in straight sets.
The Polson girls doubles teams went 12-0 on the week and showed significant improvement.
Torrin Ellis picked up a huge singles win 6-2 6-2 vs Ryan Hutchison of Corvallis. Andy Purcell of Hamilton beat Ellis 6-1 6-4 in the closest match Purcell has played all year. Polson’s varsity doubles teams went 8-1 on the week. They were undefeated in matches vs Corvallis and Hamilton.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates schedule slows down considerably in the last two weeks leading up to the divisional tournament. Polson plays Ronan at 3PM Thursday, at home, for the only match of the week and the final home match of the season.

Kings and Queens of the Court, Polson tennis rules western A
Article by Coach Bob Hislop
The Polson High School Boys and Girls Tennis teams had a very successful Northwest A Divisional tennis tournament. The boys and girls captured divisional crowns with the boys winning their title by over 20 points and the girls winning by 40 points and setting a divisional scoring mark with 73 points. The 2012 Lady Pirates held the previous scoring mark with 72 points and followed that up with a state championship the following week.
The boys were led by Torrin Ellis who lost a close championship match to Ryan Beagle of Libby who Ellis beat in 3 sets the week before. Owen McElwee and Trent Wilson were second in boys doubles, losing the championship to Mason Kelch and Dane Hunt of Whitefish. The Pirate tandem had a three-set loss to Hunt and Kelch the week before in Whitefish but didn’t play as well in the championship, losing 6-4 6-2.
Tate Barentsen and Colter Wilson battled their way through a tough divisional and won the 3rd-4th place match over Nix/Burroughs of Whitefish. Otto Lund and Noah Trosper had a fantastic divisional, that came to an end losing 6-4 in the third set of the consolation semifinals to Nix and Burroughs.
Clara Todd continued her winning ways with four wins on her way to her 2 nd consecutive divisional title. Clara still has not lost during the 2023 season. Clara beat Cloey Ramage of Columbia Falls in the championship match. Piper Hoxie and Summer Newman fought their way through a tough singles draw. Hoxie place 3rd and Newman 4th.
Katie Smith and Lucy Violett played clean tennis on both days and came out as divisional champs defeating Mercer and Scott of Whitefish in the championship match. The Polson duos of Tia Mercer and Julia Barnard and Karli Owens and Hope Morrison finished 3rd and 4th respectively.
The Lady Pirates will be sending 9 of 10 varsity players to state for the second time in school history. Their toughest competition will be Miles City who has been bolstered by a Ukrainian refugee player and three returning all-state players. The Pirate boys will take six to state and will be very much in the hunt in a crowded boys field.
The Montana State Class A Tourney will be hosted by Polson but will be held in Missoula at Fort Missoula and the Peak Athletic Club May 25-26 .

State A Tennis tournament at Missoula (The PEAK and Fort Missoula)
Polson boys strike gold, girls bring home silver
The team titles went to the Polson boys and Miles City girls.
It's our first state girls championship since 1991," Miles City coach Scott Rapson noted. "We had five seniors that all contributed, then we also had a girl from Ukraine who went on to take third (Alina Kot in singles). It was just sort of a perfect storm this year for this to happen."
Polson's boys team title was its first in a decade.
"You can say it about a lot of groups, but this is the nicest group of boys you'll ever meet — well-mannered, fabulous students and they play a little tennis too," Hislop said. "They're just phenomenal kids and multi-sport athletes. They rose up and came for the moment."
"We knew we had to have a bunch of points out of (Ellis). He didn't have the toughest draw but he didn't have an easy draw. We were hoping we'd get 13 or 16 points out of him and we got 13, so that's good."

MISSOULA — Alina Kot still remembers well the frightening morning that prompted her father to pack up the family and flee Ukraine.
They were living in war-torn Kyiv when an explosion smashed her bedroom window. "It was so scary", the Miles City junior said in between matches Thursday at the State A tennis meet at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula. "It was 4 a.m. on a Thursday, usual day, and I was supposed to go to school. My window was crushed. We went by car and crossed the border into Poland. Right now I'm so grateful I have the opportunity to study in Montana because I have friends in Ukraine and there's no opportunity to study. It's so dangerous."
From Poland the Kot family kept going until arriving in Spain, where they spent two months before departing for the United States in the summer of 2022. Her father chose Miles City because he had such a great experience as a foreign exchange student at Custer County High School when he was 16.
On Friday she will play against Clara Todd of Polson in the semifinal round at Fort Missoula. Regardless of whether she wins or loses, this spring has been a blessing for the 5-foot-10 Kot, who hopes to someday play in college.
"I really like high school tennis" she said. "In Europe we don't have school sports." "It's really cool when you have like team. I really love my team. They all are so nice. My first practice, they're all like my friends. They always support me during the games."
Because of the geographical challenges high school tennis teams face in spacious Montana, players may confront the same opponent many times in one season.
For Poison senior Clara Todd, the biggest match of her undefeated season came against a girl she had already beaten four times this spring, Columbia Fall, Cloey Ramage. Just last weekend, Ramage handed Todd her first set loss of the season in divisionals, so the final promised to be a good one Friday afternoon at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula.
Yet here she is in the State A semifinals with a perfect record. She finished third in singles last May and is determined to go farther Friday.
"When I decided to play college tennis I realized I need to take this way more seriously," said Todd, who will compete at Whitworth in Spokane starting in the fall. "I train down here at the Peak actually and then in Kalispell (indoor courts) in the winter."
"Taking third last year was very motivating. I played (2022 state champion) Eliana Foss of Hamilton in the semifinals and she was the only girl that beat me. Winning state this year has been my ultimate goal."
Todd admitted she had to overcome a case of nerves at divisionals last weekend. The nerves will certainly be part of the equation for all the semifinalists today, but Clara feels like she has turned a corner.
As it turned out, that set loss might have played to Todd's advantage. She was razor sharp from the beginning in Friday's final and kept the momentum throughout in a 6-1, 6-1 win.
"We kind of talked about how awesome it was that two girls from the West ended up in the championship"; Todd said. "It was good for me to lose that set in the divisional championship because it taught me how to overcome things. It kind of paved the way to get to here. I'm actually grateful that happened."
Todd, who will play for Whitworth in Spokane in the fall, had her toughest state match in the semifinal round Friday. She rallied to beat Alina Kot of Miles City, a Ukrainian refugee whose only loss prior to this weekend came against a Class AA foe, by the score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
In Friday's other girls singles semifinal, Cloey Ramage of Columbia Falls will face Bryn Coffin of Miles City. In the boys semifinals, Hamilton's Andy Purcell will play Libby's Ryan Beagle and Polson's Torrin Ellis will
battle Hardin's Jameson Noteboom. All four boys won their two Thursday matches in straight sets.
In girls doubles, the Corvallis tandem of Jayde Venema and Brecklyn Jessop reached the semifinals. They will play Oceilly Black Eagle and Johanna Limberhand of Hardin. In the other semifinal, favorite Rachel Fluckinger and Eden Kindberg of Dillon will play Trinity Lefthand and Avery Schubert of Hardin.
In the boys doubles semifinals Friday, Owen McElwee and Trent Wilson of Polson will face Sean Mehling and Derek Blankenship of Hardin. In the other semifinal, Mason Kelch and Dane Hunt of Whitefish will battle Matthew Newbury and Gabbo Giammattei of Billings Central.

In the boys'singles final, Hamilton's Andy Purcell capped an undefeated season with a hard-fought win over Polson's Torrin Ellis, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. It was a much different match than the one they had in the regular season that saw Purcell win in straight sets.
"I just kind of bonked in that second set after going three sets (in the semifinals) with Ryan Beagle of Libby", Purcell said. "My quads were cramping. But after I got some protein in me and a nice cold ice pack I was ready."
Purcell credited Ellis for a gutsy effort. You might say Hamilton's state champion came a long way this spring after playing in doubles at state last season.
"It was a little bit scary getting tendinitis this week because I haven't been able to hit a forehand,", Purcell said. "I just made the most of it, took some Advil and called it good."
Polson's Owen McElwee and Trent Wilson won the boys' doubles bracket, topping Billings Central's Matthew Newbury and Gabbo Giammattei in the finals, 6-3, 6-3. The Pirate duo reached the finals with a hard-fought win over Hardin's Sean Mehling and Derek Blankenship, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Pirates also got points when Colter Wilson and Tate Barentsen won the fifth-place doubles match.

WHITEFISH — The Whitefish tennis teams wrapped up Northwest A conference play with dual wins over Polson and Ronan on Friday.
The Lady Bulldogs beat Polson 4-3 and Ronan 6-1, and the boys won 5-2 against Polson and 6-1 against Ronan.
Joe Brandt at No. 1 singles and Highland Lee-French and Mason Kelch at No. 1 doubles earned wins against Polson netters, who boys coach Chris Schwaderer said played tough.
“It was a good way to close out our Northwest A schedule,” Schwaderer said. “Polson is a tough team that presents some difficult matchups for us, but today we looked solid. They all played exceptionally well. Still, I like to remind the guys that this is only the regular season. Next week is when everything truly matters, and everyone has to show up.”
Lee-French and Brandt teamed up for a doubles win against Ronan, and Kelch won in the No. 1 singles spot.
Polson doubles pair Colter Wilson and Tate Barentsen defeated Whitefish’s Fin Stagg and Jesse Burrough in a tight two-set match, 6-4, 7-5. Noah Trosper won a singles match over Whitefish’s Neil Bernat.
Ronan’s Dillon PrettyOnTop prevailed in two sets over Austin Gunset at No. 2 singles.

Lauren Brown, Whitefish’s No. 2 girls singles player, won two matches, as did doubles pair Tallory Workman and Emma Trieweiler.
Ronan pair Aaliyah Decker and Alyssa Pretty On Top defeated Ashley Gunset/Elliette Haigh 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 doubles.
