Planet Guk

Our class did a Science unit on the five senses.We used our senses to explore the properties of solids and liquids.

We made what we called"Guk " out of cornstarch and water. This makes what is called a non-Newtonian fluid, which means that it does not behave as a typical fluid: it has properties of both solids and liquids. The "Guk" flows like a liquid but breaks into pieces like a solid. When you squeeze the "Guk" it becomes solid. It looks wet but becomes powdery when you rub it.We also found, "Guk" does not support the weight of an object laid on its surface, and does not move or splatter when struck with force.After we explored this funny substance we decided to come up with a plan to have a planet, "Planet Guk", and come up with a way to land a space ship on it. We came up with some neat ideas to get a Space ship to land on "Planet Guk".

In case you're interested the recipe is 1/2 cup of cornstarch and 1/8 to 1/4 cup of water.

 My Guk proof space ship has skis to ski across Planet Guk. It has fans to make its way through the Guk. The fans go around and they go so fast they make the Guk hard. The space ship can land on Planet Guk when it is hard.

 Hock-N-S won't sink because the claws will grab part of the Planet Guk and squeeze. When you squeeze Guk it turns into a solid. So when Hock-N-S grabbed a part of it, the whole planet wouldn't be liquid, it would be solid so Hock-N-S could land.

 My space ship won't sink because it grabs into planet Guk and squeezes.

The planet becomes a solid so I can land my space ship. Men won't sink because they have jet packs.
